Support Atlanta’s Teaching Theatre

About the Project

In the words of Artistic Director Freddie Ashley, “Actor’s Express is a teaching theatre.” Our Intern Company is one of the most rigorous and successful programs of its kind in the Atlanta area. It is designed to bridge the gap between the educational and professional phases of early career artists. In residence for a full calendar year, our intern company is immersed in all layers of professional theatre.

The 2019-20 Intern Company at Actor’s Express is made up of 12 emerging artists specializing in acting, directing and stage management. Recent interns can be seen on stages all over Atlanta, as well as in hit TV shows and movies.

As part of the learning process, interns take courses, understudy mainstage roles and receive training in technical and administrative areas of theatre operations. The intern year culminates in the production of a new work commissioned specifically for this year’s intern company. Interns also have the opportunity to audition for roles in mainstage productions and participate in new play readings and workshops. In recent seasons, interns took on mainstage roles in Head Over Heels, An OctoroonThe Color Purple and The Crucible.

The intern program is offered free of charge, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost money. Here’s what we need to make sure our 2019-20 intern class has access to to best in professional training:

  • Class Instructors $6,000 - Interns take 10 classes on topics ranging from stage combat to acting for the camera taught by professional Atlanta artists. All classes are provided free of charge.
  • Original Play $3,000 - The intern year culminates in a fully produced new play commissioned for the Intern Company. This year's play will be written by Annie Harrison Elliott.
  • Administrative Support $1,000 - AE administrative staff members train and support the Intern Company throughout the year.
By investing in the artists of tomorrow, we invest in the future of theatre as an art form. This program offers some of the best post-undergraduate training in the state and introduces well trained and passionate artists to the Atlanta community. 60% of the artists who go through this program stay to live and work in the state of Georgia.

Don't forget! All donations will be matched 1:1 by the City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs.
