A place where teens are creating, leading, and thriving

About the Project

VOX ATL’s mission is to lead a youth-voice movement where teens from diverse backgrounds create a stronger, more equitable community through leadership and uncensored self-expression. Our vision is a culture where teens are creating, leading and thriving.

We hear from teens that there are not many spaces where they can be vulnerable and honest, without fear of judgment, and VOX provides a safe space for teens to create art and share their truth. VOX offers teens and young adults the opportunity to lead through workshop facilitation and peer editing. We invest in young artists’ professional development by providing leadership stipends for facilitation. VOX also celebrates celebrate teens’ voices and talents as a vital component of Atlanta’s cultural fabric. By creating an environment where teen artists are actively engaged, the community sees teens as leaders and their voices as a valuable resource to ensure our future success. Our program activities support teens in developing critical thinking skills, social responsibility and creative problem solving, and provides them with the necessary tools to enter a world in need of fresh perspectives to build peace, and bring change.

VOX provides other diverse ways for teens to access our arts-based programming through picking up our print publication at their local library, reading VOXATL.org, participating in a self-expression workshop at their school to create their own pieces or attending one of our community dialogues. Through all activities, teens are reminded that their voices are valued and we support them with the resources they need to communicate their unique perspectives.

Our arts-based opportunities for Atlanta teens include:
-Skill-Building Workshops: VOX teens participate in workshops and our summer multimedia camp to learn arts-related skills, such as audio editing or graphic design.
-Arts Coverage Opportunities: VOX teens experience art as reviewers as they attend art exhibits, concerts, and theater and then publish about those experiences.
-Community Workshops: VOX offers free self-expression, poetry and creative writing workshops for schools and youth-serving agencies throughout Atlanta.
-Community Events: VOX hosts special community dialogues where teens can create art at speak-out stations and participate in the conversation as audience members. We also lead speak-out stations for our partners.
-Arts Partnerships: We partner with other Atlanta arts organizations for special arts programming opportunities like the Teen Team at the High, re:imagine/ATL and the Alliance.
-Atlanta Youth Poet Laureate Competition: This program identifies youth writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, poetry and performance, diversity and social justice in Atlanta.
-Poetry Collective: This new program offering launched in Summer 2019. With support from a teaching artist, teens grow as writers, facilitators and performers. Our poetry collective participants will host free poetry performances and open mics that are open to teens throughout Atlanta.

All aspects of our programming have a publishing component so teens can share their voices and original art with the community. We publish three print editions each year, as well as daily content online, and we welcome submissions from teens who are not directly connected with VOX ATL. Our work demonstrates the value of teens as civic leaders and the power of their voices to impact a community dialogue and public agenda. VOX ATL provide a diverse group of teens with the opportunities and resources they need to grow as artists, communicators and leaders, both now and in the future.
