Based on actual events experienced by Gateway's Company Co-founders in areas of Global Conflict.
About the Project
Help Gateway Performance Productions produce and present an original production for spoken word, drama, mask theatre, mime and music. Your contribution is tax deductible.
Every $1 you give will be matched by $1 from the City of Atlanta. $1 becomes $2. $100 becomes $200. Even small donations of $1 or more are helpful.
The Warrior Tree is based on the experiences Gateway co-founders Sandra Hughes and Michael Hickey had while performing and teaching in national and international areas of conflict.
The production -- conceived, written, choreographed and directed by Sandra Hughes with masks created by Michael Hickey – will be performed by Sandra and Michael. The play is based on their experiences as performing artists in Cleveland, Ohio the year it became the most bombed city in America, during a terrorist attack in Amsterdam, behind the Iron Curtain in Hungary and the former Yugoslavia, in the Murder Mile in Belfast, Northern Ireland as well time travel into the life of Joan of Arc during the era of the 100 Years’ War in what is now the country of France.
Earlier versions of the play have been performed at theatres and festivals in Miami, Baltimore and Atlantic City. The title of the production refers to Joan of Arc’s Faery Tree in Domremy, France where she heard the sacred voices that instructed her to liberate her country.
Gateway’s programs have been presented locally, nationally and internationally for the live stage at theatres, arts centers, festivals, conferences, colleges, universities, schools and other community venues as well as on television, film and radio. Sandra Hughes, Gateway’s Producing Artistic Director, has received the following awards: Outstanding Partner/City of Atlanta, Outstanding Community Service/City of Atlanta and Unsung Hero Award/Fulton County Aging and Youth Services Department in Atlanta.
