The place where teens speak and Atlanta listens

About the Project

Teens come to VOX with varying degrees of previous experience and training in artistic endeavors. At VOX, they get to work with professional photographers and videographers, accomplished writers and poets. These artists guide and mentor our students as they shape their own original literary and artistic products and learn how to thoughtfully critique and review the work of other artists. Teens at VOX also have the opportunity to mentor their peers as they lead workshops, facilitate events and support other teens in content creation.

In addition to the teens who come to our downtown Atlanta newsroom for arts-related activities, we make our programming accessible to teens in living in all areas of Atlanta. VOX brings the mic (and art supplies!) to those teens who do not always have a seat at the table. Our free self-expression workshops at Atlanta schools and nonprofits provide a variety of entry points for teens to express themselves through collage making, photography, audio recording and writing.

We distribute our print editions (which include arts components) to 270+ schools and youth-serving organizations. Our publishing partnerships with other media outlets including WABE and Georgia Public Broadcasting amplify teens’ voices to an even larger audience. We are committed to sharing the voices of teen artists’ with the entire Atlanta community.

We have found that the arts offer a lens into society and also shine light on the issues that matter to our teens. The arts help create accessible entry points and provide an opportunity for teens to speak out about those issues. We hear from teens that there are not many spaces where they can be raw and honest, without fear of judgment, and VOX provides a safe space for teens to create art and share their truth through the following opportunities:

-Skill-Building Workshops: VOX teens learn arts-related skills, such as audio editing or video production.
-Arts Coverage Opportunities & Field Trips: VOX teens experience art as reviewers as they attend exhibits, concerts and theater and then publish about those experiences.
-Community Workshops: VOX offers self-expression and creative writing workshops for schools and youth-serving agencies throughout Atlanta.
-Atlanta Word Works Writing Workshops and Open Mic Series: Teaching artists (including many program alums) lead these twice-monthly workshops as teens explore themes such as arts and activism, politics and gender issues. Our free open mics take place at various locations throughout the city and are open to all teens.
-Community Events: VOX hosts community events and dialogues where teens create art at speakout stations and participate in the conversation as audience members.
-Arts Partnerships: We partner with other Atlanta arts organizations for special arts opportunities like the Teen Team at the High, ChopArt, re:imagine/ATL and the Alliance.
-Atlanta Youth Poet Laureate Competition: Each year, VOX leads the process to determine the annual Atlanta Youth Poet Laureate.

-VOXcast: Our original podcast by teens, for teens was developed in Spring 2017 with support from adult mentor and WABE reporter Molly Samuel. We are currently on the fourth season and episodes can be found on iTunes and SoundCloud! In summer 2018, we built an audio recording studio in our downtown Atlanta program space so that VOX teens can record their podcast on a regular basis, and so that other teens in the community can share their stories.

All of these activities include a publishing output. We publish three print editions each year, as well as daily content online. All publishing includes an arts component and we welcome submissions from teens who are not directly connected with VOX. Our teen-driven programming sends the message to teens and adults alike that teens’ voices matter.
