Help Out of Hand launch the Theatre Bus and O4W theatrical bus tour!

About the Project

Theatre Bus
Out of Hand needs your help to launch the Theatre Bus! Out of Hand will buy and renovate a double-decker bus, and turn it into an intimate performance space, a mobile outdoor stage, and a theatrical tour of the Old Fourth Ward. The tour will highlight the past and present of our neighborhood, a jewel of urban renewal facing the displacement of historic residents due to soaring property values and lack of affordable housing. The Theatre Bus will also serve as a center of community activity including open mic nights, traveling music, theatre and arts events, and portable educational theatre installations. This fall, we will design the bus renovation and tour and conduct market research to prepare for the big purchase.

Old Fourth Ward

The MLK Historic District in The Old Fourth Ward is Out of Hand’s home, and it is one of Atlanta’s top tourist attractions—arguably one of the most important tourist destinations in the US—with 850,000 people visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site each year. There is a thriving tour market, but there are no local performing arts offerings celebrating the Civil Rights history of the neighborhood. The Old Fourth Ward is one of the most historic, trendy, diverse and segregated neighborhoods in Atlanta. Home to the King Center, Martin Luther King’s birth home and Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Old Fourth Ward’s newest offerings include Ponce city market, The Beltline, our famous murals, and Jackson Street Bridge, known for the best skyline of Atlanta, as well as the largest Section 8 public housing development in the Southeastern United States.

History and Housing

The Theatre Bus and Tour grew out of IAMO4W, a series of 3 conversations—two dinners and a lunch—designed to bring the neighborhood together for dialogue and data gathering. IAMO4W revealed a strong desire to promote the neighborhood’s history and a deep concern over affordable housing. In fact, history and affordable housing are the top priorities identified by the over 200 residents who attended IAMO4W.
