Help Artists Explore, Experiment, and Create!

About the Project

The Center for Puppetry Arts strives to be a place that encourages artists (new and established) to challenge themselves, learn more, and create new and interesting work. In 1983, the Center for Puppetry Arts established a new program, Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT) which provides a safe space for artists to stretch their creative muscles and provides an opportunity for audiences to engage with thought-provoking works of puppetry for adult audiences.

XPT gives a voice to emerging artists by encouraging them to develop, direct, design, and/or perform their short works of puppet theater and film, serving as an incubator for artists to create new work, take risks, experiment with new ideas, and develop their skills and voices. Through the XPT program, artists are provided with creative guidance, a place to design and rehearse their works, the opportunity to connect with other artists and co-creators, and a small stipend. Time, space, mentorship, and the freedom to experiment are all essential components of the XPT process.

Because the pieces are short (less than 10 minutes each), new ideas can be explored without a large investment of time or expense. In addition to benefitting the artists and pushing the boundaries of puppetry, XPT also exemplifies the Center's commitment to providing cutting-edge puppetry for adult audiences. Many XPT pieces explore themes of race relations, relationships, philosophical ideas, and more.

XPT has become an important Atlanta cultural tradition over the past 35 years. In addition to the artists’ needs addressed by XPT, the audience is also enriched by engaging with new, innovative art and by taking part in a dialogue with the creators after each performance. You can help keep this project going with your contribution to support the Center.

For a limited time, your contribution will be matched and have DOUBLE the impact, thanks to the generosity of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs!

Help keep this important artistic tradition alive! Be a part of the Xperiment!
About the Center: The Center for Puppetry Arts' mission is to inspire imagination, education, and community through the global art of puppetry. The Center uses puppetry as a means to encourage creativity, support school-day learning, fuel holistic development, and provide accessible, hands-on opportunities to participate in arts activities. The Center focuses on three interrelated areas of programming:  Performance, Museum, and Education. The Center annually offers more than 500 fully-staged theatrical puppetry performances in the Center’s two theaters. Each year, the Center offers a Family Series for family audiences, schools, and groups as well as a New Directions Series for Adults and Teens. The Center's Worlds of Puppetry Museum houses the world’s largest collection of Jim Henson puppets and features one of the largest collections of global puppetry in the country. The Dean DuBose Smith Special Exhibits Gallery features exhibitions like Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls that provide a deeper look into Henson and global puppetry themes. The Museum attracts and educates visitors of all ages and offers events and programs for a wide range of ages. Toddler Tuesdays, World Wednesdays, Museum EdVentures, special guided tours, and more help to expand upon the learning that happens within its exhibitions.   The interactive, arts-infused Education Program helps visitors explore their creativity and celebrate their unique talents through Create-A-Puppet Workshops™, Discovery Days, the Junior Explorers series, and outreach experiences. Workshops for adult audiences round out the Program, allowing participants to expand their knowledge of puppetry and improve their performance skills. The Center’s Distance Learning Program uses videoconferencing and recorded content modules to reach students from all 50 states and nine countries through hands-on programming and performances.
