Unleash the creative potential of young artists by supporting APS programs ArtEd and #yourbasics.

About the Project

WonderRoot invests significantly in youth arts education, supplementing limited public arts education in Atlanta Public Schools.  Our programs specifically target schools serving students living in poverty and lacking sufficient access to a variety of extracurricular activities and development opportunities, crucial elements to student success.  Our Creative Youth Development programs such as ArtEd and #YourBasics provide youth with arts learning and enrichment opportunities, embracing data that draws strong correlation between exposure to artistic endeavors, graduation rates, reading and math scores, and problem-solving skills.  Additionally, WonderRoot fulfills our mission to unite artists and community to inspire positive social change by partnering with youth-serving nonprofits and schools to engage youth in public works of art, allowing them to engage in social commentary and build meaningful relationships between communities and their public spaces.

ArtED—WonderRoot’s creative skill-building program that provides high school students with the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of artistic mediums, learn directly from professional artists, build community, and develop a voice on and off campus.  ArtED supplements the high school fine arts curriculum through a broad range of one-time and ongoing workshops and courses that are offered for free to students during the school year.  During the Spring semester of this year, we offered a 2D Stop-Motion Animation taught by partner organization Asifa South International Animation Society.  For the current Fall Semester, we are collaborating with local animator, Allyssa Lewis of My Animation Life to offer an Animation Bootcamp.  These programs provide technical skills that can be applied to students' current academic pursuits, college applications as well as available jobs in the tech and entertainment industries, which are expanding in the area.

#yourbasics—Started in 2015, #yourbasics is WonderRoot’s free intensive art school prep course designed for Atlanta Public High School students interested in pursuing a college education in the arts. Led by a pool of distinguished local arts professionals and national art school representatives, the course provides students with the knowledge, skills, tools, and resources needed to put together strong college applications.  Over the course, participants learn about the art school admission process, enhance their writing and communication skills, learn how to document artwork and assemble a strong portfolio, and participate in a series of field trips to local arts institutions.

As arts-based education programs are being removed from a variety of local school systems and community centers, WonderRoot is committed to supplementing and enriching students’ education with arts instruction that equips youth with new creative skills, enabling them to discover untapped passions. We believe that by providing easy access to art making tools and creative development resources, we can transform young lives by empowering youth to think critically and express their creativity. We believe that art is an agent of change, and we feel these educational initiatives will help cultivate a new generation of artists who are equally invested in both their creative and social practices.

As we continue to solidify and expand our creative youth development programs, we need the support of our community to ensure that these programs are sustainable and can increase participation.  Long-term participation by students furthers their achievements in the arts as well as other creative outlets, all of which translate to high-quality skills that are marketable in a 21st century workforce.  Situating the programs for expanded enrollment ensures more of Atlanta's youth access the benefits of being exposed to Atlanta's artist community, training, and skill-building empowering the students to successfully enter higher education, creative careers, and lead social change in their communities.

Thank you to all of our supporters and the City of Atlanta for partnering with WonderRoot!  We urge you to join us as we utilize the arts to improve the lives of Atlanta's most important and deserving members of our community.
