Help Us Build This Groovy Puppet Show!

About the Project

Pete the Cat is a beloved series of fun, lighthearted children’s books by author James Dean of Decatur, GA. The Center’s artistic team thought Pete the Cat would make a groovy puppet show and luckily, James Dean agreed! On April 4, 2017, Pete the Cat will debut at the Center- but we need your help to bring these great stories to life!

This new show will be a groovy adventure of one cool, skateboarding, surfing, rocking blue cat and his funky friends. Over the next few months Center staff will be working to build new puppets, create new costumes, construct new sets, write scripts and music, rehearse, and publicize the show. The Center’s Artistic Director, Resident Puppet Builder, and Education Director have been visiting local schools, getting awesome ideas from students and teachers about the script, sets, costumes and puppets that will make up Pete’s world. During the run of Pete the Cat (April 4-May 21, 2017) visitors will be able to see the show, make a Pete the Cat Hand Puppet in our Create-A-Puppet Workshop™, and visit our brand new Worlds of Puppetry Museum.
Sensory-Friendly versions of Center programming and Pete the Cat will be presented on April 23, 2017, featuring specialized modifications for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Center Family Series performances, like Pete the Cat, introduce children to the magic of live theatre, spark imagination, and help to instill a long-lasting appreciation for the arts. They also teach children about topics including literature, social studies, and science, and math - as well as life lessons such as self-confidence and anti-bullying.

For a limited time, your contribution will be matched and have DOUBLE the impact, thanks to the generosity of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs!

Don’t delay! Help Us Build This Groovy Show Today!

About the Center: The Center for Puppetry Arts' mission is to inspire imagination, education, and community through the global art of puppetry. The Center uses puppetry as a means to encourage creativity, support school-day learning, fuel holistic development, and provide accessible, hands-on opportunities to participate in arts activities. The Center focuses on three interrelated areas of programming:  Museum, Performance, and Education. The Center annually offers more than 500 fully-staged theatrical puppetry performances in the Center’s two theaters. Each year, the Center offers a Family Series for family audiences, schools, and groups as well as a New Directions Series for Adults and Teens. The Center's Worlds of Puppetry Museum houses the world’s largest collection of Jim Henson puppets and features one of the largest collections of global puppetry in the country. Over the past year, nearly 100,000 visitors have been inspired and educated by this new Museum, which cares for and displays hundreds of meaningful objects and puppets. The interactive, arts-infused Education Program helps visitors explore their creativity and celebrate their unique talents through Create-A-Puppet Workshops™, Discovery Days, the Junior Explorers series, and outreach experiences. Workshops for adult audiences round out the Program, allowing participants to expand their knowledge of puppetry and improve their performance skills. The Center’s Distance Learning Program uses videoconferencing and recorded content modules to reach students from 49 states and eight countries through hands-on programming and performances.
