Dr Doris Derby's Civil Rights photography & UNLOADED: A group show about guns

About the Project

Dashboard US has been producing award-winning art experiences in Atlanta for 6 years. In the first part of 2017, we'll present two shows on the urgent, timely themes of social organizing, civil rights, and gun culture.

FEBRUARY 2017
Dashboard US will present Women Change Agents: The Photographs of Dr. Doris Derby, a timely exhibition inspired by the ability of women, particularly, women of color, to inspire positive social change.

Dr. Doris Derby’s photographs depict the roles of female Civil Rights leaders, 1963 – 1972. Despite the odds, personal sacrifices, and potential danger for many African Americans, outstanding accomplishments were achieved by these women in the areas of art, education, media, health, self-help economics, politics, law, community organization, and student activism.

Dr. Derby is an artist, activist and educator who worked in the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama alongside of Fannie Lou Hamer, Dr. Dorothy Height, Dr. Dorothy Cotton, Dr. Septima Clark, Senator Julian Bond, Congressman John Lewis, Mayor Andrew Young, Reverend Hosea Williams, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others.

On view February 3 to April 5, 2017 at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

 APRIL 2017

As the National Rifle Association's annual conference lands in Atlanta, Dashboard US welcomes UNLOADED, a multimedia group show that explores historical and social issues surrounding the availability, use, and impact of guns in our culture. Curated by Susanne Slavick, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, the exhibition features Mel Chin’s 2002 sculpture, Cross for the Unforgiven (pictured). Additionally, Dashboard will commission works by local artists to add the show.

On view April 27 to May 20, 2017. More at dashboard.us

Funds given to this campaign will go directly to exhibition costs for both shows. Specifically, to supplement exorbitant framing costs of Dr. Derby's photographs (24" x 36") and to artist fees and material costs for UNLOADED.

These exhibitions are in partnership with The Airport Art Program at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Carnegie Mellon University, and Chunky Feets, LLC.
