Enriched local history programming that connects you to your community

About the Project

Local history, even in the best of times, is crucial to our well-being and peace of mind. It strengthens our sense of community and deepens our sense of place. Now, more than ever, history provides a foundation and touchstone to connect you with our family, friends, and neighbors. Our history bonds us together and helps us to better understand these challenging times.

Montgomery History, which has been serving the county for over 75 years, is responding to this crisis in four ways.

1.     We are moving our face-to-face programs online. Our new History Conversations program—beginning on March 31—will help you stay connected from the comfort of your home. Since you can’t attend our Tuesday Talks, Speakers Bureau presentations, or pop-up exhibits, we are going to be streaming these programs online so you can take part virtually. History Conversations will feature our most popular speakers and topics and are suitable for all ages. Whether you’re a student, lifelong learner, or somewhere in between, you’ll find these programs engaging, relevant, and entertaining.

2.     We are inviting Montgomery Countians to record their day-to-day experiences during this historic crisis. Your journal, photos, video diaries, or other personal accounts will be of incalculable value to future historians. Our COVID-19 Archive will provide a permanent repository and our staff will offer guidance and support. Your accounts will ensure posterity understands how these historic events touched our lives in Montgomery County and shaped our thoughts and actions.

3.     We are launching a new podcast, “Hometown Voices,so you can hear directly from the people in our past as they share their stories of helping to build the Montgomery County of today. Excerpted from the Montgomery History Oral History Collection, “Hometown Voices” will give you an unfiltered view into the thinking of many of our most important and interesting residents.

4.     We are upgrading our website to make your local history—including our popular online exhibits, videos from History Conference sessions, episodes of “Paths to the Present,” and much more—easier to find. When you visit MontgomeryHistory.org, you’ll have 24/7 access to stories of our collective past that will challenge, comfort, and inspire.

Your support
at this time will enable us to serve Montgomery County—you and the people you care about and depend upon—with programming that will bring us together as a community and build stronger, more meaningful bonds with one another. Help us make your history more accessible and relevant than ever before! Please consider making a donation today. Any amount will make a difference, and every donation will be matched $1 for $1!
