Providing Emergency Support to Artists Impacted by Coronavirus

About the Project

Every year, InterAct Story Theatre artists go into schools and community spaces across our area, bringing theatre, opportunities to learn through the arts, and moments of pure joy to thousands of children, teachers, and families. With schools and arts venues closed due to the coronavirus, none of that work can happen, leaving artists without work. Many artists are scouring the news daily, just like everybody else, worried about how they're going to make ends meet and what will happen if or when schools don’t reopen.

InterAct Story Theatre stands to lose between $74,500 and $99,900 of income—between 25% - 33% of our total income for the year. That’s a sobering figure, but honestly, we’re more concerned that our hardworking artists are facing income losses totaling $60,000 - $70,000 as programs are cancelled.  That’s terrifying if you’re an individual artist working in a gig economy.

At InterAct Story Theatre, we are our artists, and our artists are us. We are trying our best at InterAct Story Theatre to provide a safety net for our amazing artists, by issuing payments even when we aren’t being paid, by providing advances and prepayments to artists, by freeing up funds for artists to use, and by creating as many opportunities for work as possible.  We’re committed to taking care of our artists to the best of our ability, and we’re asking for your help so we can do the best we can, as much as we can, for as long as we can.

We are raising $12,000 for our Emergency Artist Relief Fund, to support the artists who do so much and work so hard to bring theatre, learning, and joy to children in our schools and communities.  With your help, we can make this happen!
The first $5,000 we raise in this Power2Give Campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, getting us that much closer to our goal!

Your donation supports InterAct’s Emergency Relief Fund for Artists. Here’s how!
When schools in Maryland closed on March 16, we sprang into action to create InterAct Story Theatre’s Emergency Relief Plan for Artists.  We’re a small organization, and we don’t have a lot of liquidity, but we’re putting what we have to work to help see our artists through this time. Your donation helps us implement this plan fully, and implement it well. Here is what your donation helps us do:

  1. This week, we issued immediate payments to artists for 50% payments for any programs cancelled during this initial school closure of March 16 - 27. That money is for the artists whether these programs are rescheduled or not, because we know artists need to pay rent on April 1.
  2. We are creating the InterAct Story Theatre Emergency Relief Fund for Artists, so that any InterAct Story Theatre artist who has programs postponed due to coronavirus can request a 50% prepayment or advance of the funds they would have earned if they had been able to perform their program. We hope to provide this safety net for artists through the rest of the school year, and maybe even beyond this school year if we have the funds to do it. Your donations help make this happen.
  3. Even while schools and community programs are closed, we’re working tirelessly to create economic opportunities for our artists to create artistic work, showcase that work, and participate in the day-to-day business of running this arts organization even when we’re not able to be out and about in the community. Your donations help us fund opportunities and put artists to work, even while InterAct’s programs are closed down. We’re moving our annual KidStory Theatre Festival online, creating jobs for artists. Also, check out the donor benefits with each donation level—each of these benefits creates a job opportunity for one or more fabulous InterAct Story Theatre artists, who are excited to get to work creating a wonderful arts moment for you.
  4. If we raise more, we can do more!  We’ve set a goal of $12,000. The project bar in this Power2Give Campaign is limited to $10,000 because the maximum match for any campaign this spring is $5,000.  If we can raise our $12,000 goal, that helps us put our Emergency Relief Plan to work to help artists right away. If we meet our stretch goal of $20,000, that allows us to increase the level of prepayments and advances we can offer artists, and allows us to fund more income opportunities for more artists, even during this time that InterAct Story Theatre isn’t earning income.

We are committed to helping and supporting the artists who do so much to bring arts and learning to children, educators, and families throughout our area. We hope you’ll consider helping us reach our goal, and we hope that you and your family are finding ways to be safe, healthy, and happy. Thank you so very much for your support—we love bringing the arts to our community, and we can’t wait to bring the arts to our schools and communities again, live and in person!
