Re-Imaging For the 21st Century

About the Project

Hammonds House Museum presents four exhibitions in 2020, opening with Translocation & Transfiguration by multidisciplinary artist Masud Olufani. Olufani’s practice explores the resonance of memory; the narrative traditions of African and African American folklore; and the fluid, improvisatory nature of Black vernacular expressions. Paired with the January opening of Olufani’s exhibition is a solo dance performance and conversation entitled Black Like Me: An Exploration of the Word Nigger by Seattle based dancer/choreographer Jade Solomom Curtis. These works launch a year-long arts and humanities based conversation centered in the diversity of “blackness”.  For the first time we are pulling a theme throughout the year which is both challenging and exciting.

The other exhibitions for 2020 include Nu Africans by Maurice Evans and Grace Kisa, The Art of Crunk According to Pastor Troy by Pastor Troy, Shannon McCollum and Kevin Sipp and Mache Nan Soulye ou (Walking in Your Shoes) ... Exploring Haitian Migration by Tracy Murrell. Lectures, conversations, educational programs, excursions and community engagement activities round out the activities for the year.  Your donation to Hammonds House Museum supports the development and presentation of these works and the creation of companion educational curriculum.
