Help Synchronicity’s SheWRITES cultivate Atlanta by supporting emerging women playwrights!

About the Project

Women’s voices have stood as the bedrock of change in our world. From politics to technology to economic development or the arts, when a woman is provided dedicated space, amplified voice with a pen and a creative mind- it’s revolutionary.

The challenge remains steep for women’s narratives to be heard. However, Synchronicity’s mission is dedicated to making space and uplifting these voices serving as a recognized leader in the Southeast (and across the country) for the development of new work centered on sharing women’s narratives. Synchronicity also brings theatre and community together to create theatrical experiences that are powerful, transformative and extend beyond the theatre walls. For all of our shows, we work with local Atlanta and national community partners to foster powerful dialogue around vital issues we must address together. In the end, we hope women and girls can find a community of support in Atlanta that says their voices matter and deserve to be lifted.

This season we present our biennial SheWRITES New Play Festival, putting emerging women playwrights at the forefront. Synchronicity Theatre provides three women playwrights with the opportunity to develop previously unproduced work and garner exposure for these new pieces. Synchronicity will bring these playwrights to our Atlanta community with full support and workshops to investigate, tweak, prod, and polish their plays with the help of a director, a dramaturg, a stage manager and a cast of the best Atlanta actors available. SheWRITES embraces the Atlanta playwriting community through unique and robust partnerships with Atlanta’s own Working Title Playwrights and other community supporters. The experience of SheWRITES is transformative for the participating playwrights and leads to significant advancement of these new pieces of theatre and brightens the theatrical cannon.

Additionally, Synchronicity continues to raise up women by providing ongoing support to artists discovered during SheWRITES.  A recent example is 2018 SheWRITES participant Kimberly Monks, whose piece HANDS OF COLOR went on to be fully produced and featured as a mainstage production at Synchronicity Theatre. HANDS OF COLOR was wildly-popular, recently garnering three Suzi Bass award nominations,  and demonstrated not only the high-quality of arts Synchronicity is known for but also challenged audience members to look beyond the stage and examine real world issues faced by our nation.

The SheWRITES festival is only one avenue Synchronicity uses to advance the narratives of women in theatrical spaces. The festival is accompanied by an entire season dedicated to honoring new and inspiring women. This year we present: ·

1 World Premiere: WAYFINDING by Whitney Rowland

  •  This spring we bring forth a new play WAYFINDING (3/5/19-3/29/19) by Whitney Rowland which spotlights a new bold voice that will connect with any women’s journey to find her place in the universe in the midst of loss.
2 Female Adaptations of Classics

  •  An all-female cast adaption of Shakespeare’s classic MAC | BETH (10/4/19-10/27/19) by Erica Schmidt. This dystopian take includes a cast of 7 young women and begs the question of what happens when a girl discovers her voice  and agency.
  • THE BLUEST EYE (6/5/19- 6/28/19) by Toni Morrison adapted by Lydia R. Diamond for stage in celebration of Morrison’s bold worldwide impact on women writers. The story is of a young girls attempt to find her path and escape- possibly through blue eyes?

3 Women selected as part of our 2019-20 Stripped Bare Arts Incubator cohort

  • Synchronicity Theatre offers four local Atlanta early career artists space to flex their wings with our art incubator project Stripped Bare.  This year, three of those projects are by women. Utilizing our theatre space and professional support, Stripped Bare provides space to our community to create and test-drive new ideas.

Donate now to SheWRITES and help build a community that raises up trailblazing women’s voices that transform and uplift through the arts.

Funds raised through Power2Give will go to funding the SheWRITES New Play Festival including three emerging women playwrights and supporting artists, support programs including Stripped Bare which sparks crucial local community dialogue, and promote engagement events connecting Atlanta to emerging Smart, Gutsy, and Bold women narratives in theatre!
