About This Project

Healing the heART: Creative Journaling Empowers Victims of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence affects millions of people annually in the U.S., mostly women and children, but also the people who love them.

Art-making cultivates self-awareness and our ability to heal ourselves.  Without promise of 'fixing' our wounds and traumas, Creative Journaling is a healing tool that gives voice to our experiences without judgment. It is a practice available to everyone, regardless of ethnicity, education or economics.

There is no safer place to tell one's story--with or without words -- than in the privacy of a personal journal. And so may begin the healing process for families in crisis. The Dunedin Fine Art Center in partnership with The Haven of RCS (Religious Community Services) seek to introduce the transformative power of creative journaling to victims of domestic abuse.

The guidance and tools shared via this project aspire to:  soothe the spirit; release the past; restore wholeness and inspire hope! With the aid of a professional artist and compassionate guide, each adult participant will receive a private journal, art materials and introductory instruction in visual journaling. While parents spend devoted time exploring the journaling process, their children will also be engaged in self-affirming art projects tailored to their hearts and minds.

Journaling sessions will be conducted twice a month, with journals distributed to a new group of participants each time. This initiative will put a journal into the hands of 480 individuals and provide comfort and inspiration to countless children in transition.

Your support of this project provides:

A journal to each participant ($5.75 each)
Assorted art materials for personalizing their journals
Payment for two professional visual artists / facilitators (one for adults, one for children)
Art-making supplies for children’s activities
power2give hosting, admin and credit card fees
