About This Project

Raleigh Review invites you to open a new chapter for emerging writers by sponsoring a scholarship seat for a 2-day Southern Recitations writing workshop.

Southern Recitations

Southern Recitations is a workshop and reading series taking place Fall 2014 through Spring 2015. Six award-winning writers will teach weekend workshops in poetry, fiction or creative non-fiction, and will perform readings the corresponding Saturday evening. Each 2-day workshop is limited to 15 participants, allowing students to receive hands-on guidance from the instructor. Readings are free and open to the public.

To make these workshops accessible for those who might not otherwise be able to attend, our Power2Give goal is to raise $1700 to sponsor SIX scholarship seats, one in each workshop. For every $250 donated, one scholarship recipient will work with an award-winning poet or writer. Scholarship recipients will be selected through an application process that assesses both writing skill and financial need.

Workshop Value

Here’s what one past participant had to say:

In the 2013 Raleigh Review Poetry Workshop, our task was to take a memory that we hadn’t dared to write about and write a poem that contained repeated images. My workshop exercise poem became “Amnesia,” and was a way for me to grapple with my father’s PTSD and Parkinson’s. I workshopped early drafts with two other poets I met at the workshop, and earlier this year “Amnesia” won second place in The William J. Shaw Memorial Prize for Poetry.

About Raleigh Review
Raleigh Review is a national non-profit magazine of poetry, short fiction, and art, offering work that is emotionally and intellectually complex without being unnecessarily “difficult.” At Raleigh Review we believe that great literature inspires empathy by allowing us to see the world through the eyes of our neighbors, whether across the street or across the globe.

Please help us inspire emerging writers by opening a chapter of possibility for them!
