About This Project

The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) strives to serve the creative interests of its communities by fostering exploration of art, design and the natural environment. In response to recent visitor feedback indicating the desire for more interactive family activities, the IMA will launch the Art Packs Program this summer. Designed to break down the barriers of fine art and put the power of arts education in the hands of visitors, this new gallery resource will allow families to experience works of art through hands-on activities designed specifically for those with a little Georgia O’Keeffe or Pablo Picasso in tow!

Each pack is self-directed so that every family can work at their own pace. The Art Pack contains materials centered on a theme such as line, shape, color, or pattern. For example, a pack highlighting how lines are used in works of art across different cultures and periods may contain such things as an Etch A Sketch, Twisteez wire, yarn, and gallery-safe drawing materials that all correspond to particular objects in the IMA’s permanent collection of more than 54,000 objects. Using innovative games, critical thinking, interactive clues, and creative art projects, families will work together to gain a broader understanding of the collections on view and the artistic principles behind them. The IMA will include surveys in the Art Packs, in order to better understand how the packs are used, the level of satisfaction with the activities, and suggestions for improvements.

Your donation contributes directly to the creation of 40 Art Packs to be made available for visitors to check out free of charge at the IMA Welcome Center during Museum operating hours. Contributions support the cost of backpacks, materials, program evaluation, and the maintenance of each pack to ensure they can be used frequently with minimal wear and tear. The IMA  appreciates your support!
