About This Project

Want to see the beauty of the natural world through an artist's eyes?  Gain a whole new perspective at the Indianapolis Zoo's annual Naturally Inspired Paint Out as artists and animals join forces to celebrate art and advance conservation.  You can help the Zoo reach our goal of $2,273 and bring wildlife to canvas - before your very eyes.

On April 27, 2013 this event will bring talented artists from Central Indiana to the Zoo to create a naturally inspired masterpiece.  A group of 15 juried artists are selected to paint or sculpt "en plein air" (outdoors) interpreting their vision of the Zoo and Gardens.  Thousands of visitors to the Zoo that day can walk the Zoo grounds and observe the artists at work.  If you are one of the first 200 kids to visits, you will receive art supplies to create your own "en plein air" work of art.  You might also see one of the Zoo's artistically-inclined animals working on its own interpretation.

The traditional Zoo audience is families with children, and this program acts as a "point of entry" to the arts.  This event helps the Zoo promote and create awareness for the arts, connect art and nature, and provide new venues for artists to express their art form.

After the paintings have dried and been professionally framed, they will be on display in the Schaefer Rotunda at the Gardens from June 1 - August 28.  A silent auction and artists' reception will be held on August 29.

Your donations to this project will help directly pay for the stipends of the artists and for art supplies.

So take a look through the eyes of the artist - whether a human or an 8,000 pound elephant - and gain new insight into the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
